New factual show, Eat the Invaders, presented by Tony Armstrong – coming to ABC in 2025
November 26, 2024
As invasive species devastate our native environment, should we be learning to catch, cook and eat them to help save Australia? Pests like Cane Toads, Camels, Carp, Deer, Rabbits and Cats have driven many of our native plants and animals to the brink of extinction. But what if a radical rethink, inspired by Kirsha Kaechele’s Eat the Problem, could help turn this problem into an opportunity? Over six episodes, host Tony Armstrong – with the help of scientists, landcarers, and a unique collaboration with a chef and artist from Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) – will attempt to turn our unwanted ecological trash into desirable culinary gold.
In each episode we welcome celebrity guests to eat an invasive art feast at Mona. Poh sits down to a space alien rabbit garden party, while Nat’s What I Reckon and Claire Hooper think they got the short end of the stick when they’re served carp. Tony invites his girlfriend Rona Glynn-McDonald (CEO & Music Producer) and her dad – acclaimed filmmaker Warwick Thornton – to a camel feast, while King’s Council Geoffrey Roberston sits down to chew the deer fat. Will Bob Katter seriously eat a poisonous cane toad… and is it even legal for Dr Karl to eat a cat?
Written and directed by Matthew Bate, produced by Rebecca Summerton and Sarah Wormald, Eat the Invaders will premiere on ABC & iView on 7 January 2025, 8:30pm.
